Bergamot Essential Oil for Sleep: What the Research Shows

What Is in Bergamot Essential Oil?

Bergamot essential oil is usually expressed from the peel of Citrus bergamia and has a chemical profile that is softer and more floral than many familiar citrus oils. Reviews of bergamot oil describe a volatile fraction dominated by limonene, linalyl acetate and linalool, with smaller amounts of compounds such as γ-terpinene and β-pinene. Reported proportions vary by cultivar, origin and extraction method. [6], [7]

One widely cited review reports approximate ranges of 25–53% limonene, 15–40% linalyl acetate and 2–20% linalool. The short version: limonene is the bright citrus part you recognise straight away, and linalyl acetate and linalool are the soft floral part. Bergamot contains more of these softer aromatic compounds than many citrus oils, which helps explain why it smells rounded rather than sharp. Linalyl acetate and linalool are also two of the dominant aromatic compounds in lavender. [6], [8]

Why Is Bergamot Used at Bedtime?

Bergamot is unusual for a citrus oil because its aroma can feel both bright and settling at the same time. The limonene gives it recognizable citrus lift, while linalyl acetate and linalool add a softer floral-fruity layer. That makes bergamot easier to place in an evening routine than a very sharp lemon-like aroma.

Professional aromatherapy sources also position bergamot as an evening or “good-night” scent and describe it as unexpectedly relaxing for a citrus oil. That professional use does not prove a sleep effect by itself, but it aligns with the more recent clinical sleep research discussed below. [9]

What Does the Research Show About Bergamot and Sleep?

Current human research suggests that bergamot aromatherapy may support sleep quality and sleep continuity. The strongest recent evidence includes objective polysomnography as well as randomized trials using self-reported sleep measures. [1], [2]

Three terms that come up below. Sleep efficiency is simply the share of your time in bed that you actually spend asleep, so a higher number means less lying there awake. Wake after sleep onset is how much time you spend awake after you first drop off. Slow-wave sleep is the deep, restorative stage of sleep. Sensor-based lab studies (polysomnography) measure all three directly, rather than asking you how you think you slept.

The most useful study so far started from a very ordinary problem: staying on your phone and going to bed later than you meant to. A 2026 placebo-controlled trial asked 15 healthy male university students (all with an intermediate chronotype, meaning they were neither strong morning nor strong evening types) to sleep in a lab under four conditions. The researchers tested a normal bedtime and a deliberately delayed bedtime, each with placebo or bergamot. Everyone got the same eight-hour window in bed, and sleep was recorded with sensors rather than questionnaires. [1]

Bergamot helped on both kinds of night, and it helped more on the late ones. Sleep efficiency rose 8.43% after a delayed bedtime and 4.85% after a normal one. Time spent awake after first falling asleep dropped by 34.7 minutes and 17.5 minutes respectively, both statistically significant. [1]

What did not change was the mix of sleep stages. In plain terms: bergamot did not appear to alter what kind of sleep people got, it just helped them stay asleep for more of the night. That is a narrower claim than “bergamot deepens your sleep,” and it is the one the data actually supports.

Earlier evidence points in a similar direction but uses subjective sleep measures. In a 2023 randomized two-period crossover trial, 48 university students used either a bergamot or placebo spray before bedtime and again on awakening for one week, followed by a one-week washout and the alternate condition. On a standard Japanese sleep questionnaire, the bergamot week scored significantly better on three things: how groggy they felt on waking, how refreshed they felt, and how long they felt they had slept. Their mood, anxiety and stress scores improved too. [2]

A 2024 randomized controlled trial adds another direct human data point. Fifty-four surgical intensive care patients were randomized to lavender, bergamot or control groups. After two nights of inhalation aromatherapy, the bergamot group showed significantly better questionnaire-based sleep-quality scores than the control group. This supports a possible bedtime role for bergamot, but the setting was highly specific and the outcome was self-reported rather than measured with PSG. [12]

Blend research provides additional, but less bergamot-specific, evidence. A 2025 factorial randomized trial involving 132 postmenopausal women tested lavender–bergamot aromatherapy alongside placebo and mindfulness conditions. After eight weeks, the aromatherapy group scored 1.7 points better on a widely used sleep-quality questionnaire than the control group. The improvement was modest but statistically significant. Because the two oils were used together, there is no way to know how much of that came from bergamot rather than lavender. [3]

Not every study has found a sleep benefit. A 2022 randomized trial in 60 postpartum women compared daily bergamot aroma with a water control. Depressive mood improved in the bergamot group, but sleep quality did not differ significantly between groups at either follow-up. That matters because it suggests bergamot’s effect may depend on the population, exposure pattern or sleep problem being studied. [4]

Evidence takeaway: Bergamot now has direct human sleep research, including objective PSG data. The clearest recent signal is around sleep continuity and perceived sleep quality, while results vary across populations and study designs. The evidence is promising enough to support a bedtime-aromatherapy role, but not strong enough to treat bergamot as a proven insomnia therapy.

Truth Check: More Bergamot Aroma Is Not Necessarily Better for Sleep

A stronger aroma does not automatically create better sleep. A 2025 study put healthy volunteers in a sleep chamber at two bergamot levels: a moderate one and a noticeably stronger one. At the moderate level, nothing much changed compared with a scent-free room. At the stronger level, people got significantly less deep sleep (p = .03) and rated their sleep as less calm (p = .024). Tellingly, half the group asked for the scent to be turned down at the higher level, even though the nose adapts to a smell fairly quickly. [5]

One more finding is worth knowing if you are choosing a bedtime scent for yourself. The study also found exploratory sex differences, although the sample was too small to treat them as firm conclusions. At the higher concentration, women in the study fell asleep faster (p = .046), while men showed less deep sleep than women did (p = .046). The researchers concluded that a good aromatic sleep environment has to account for personal preference, not just a single "right" strength. [5]

The practical lesson is simple. Treat scent as part of the bedroom, like lighting or temperature. It should be set at a comfortable level rather than turned up as far as it will go. If the smell is the thing you notice most when you get into bed, it is probably too strong.

How Professional Aromatherapy Positions Bergamot at Bedtime

Professional aromatherapy sources commonly describe bergamot as calming, emotionally balancing and suitable for evening use despite its citrus identity. Tisserand Institute describes bergamot as a mild evening or “good-night” scent, while Tisserand Aromatherapy notes that its composition makes it an unexpectedly relaxing citrus oil that can be used in sleep-oriented routines. That traditional and professional positioning now has more research behind it than it did a few years ago. The 2026 PSG trial is especially useful because it moves the discussion beyond “bergamot feels calming” and into measurable sleep continuity.

A Brief Safety Note

Expressed bergamot oil can be phototoxic on skin because it may contain furocoumarins such as bergapten. IFRA restricts expressed bergamot oil in relevant leave-on fragrance categories because of phototoxicity. FCF (furocoumarin-free) or rectified bergamot oils substantially reduce this particular risk. Avoid casual ingestion, follow the directions for the specific product you own, and take extra care with topical use before sun or UVA exposure. Oxidized citrus oils may also increase skin-sensitization risk. [6], [11]

Where Bergamot Fits in a Bedtime Aroma Strategy

Bergamot is a good fit when you want a bedtime scent that feels lighter than woods and roots but softer than a sharp daytime citrus. Its citrus-floral profile can suit people who find vetiver too earthy, cedarwood too dry or Roman chamomile too floral-herbal.

Does bergamot essential oil help you sleep?

Human studies suggest bergamot aromatherapy may support some aspects of sleep quality and sleep continuity. A 2026 crossover trial found improvements in objective sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset, while a 2023 crossover trial found better self-reported morning refreshment and sleep length. Results are not positive in every population, so bergamot is better viewed as complementary bedtime aromatherapy than as an insomnia treatment.
